there’s nothing wrong with anything

thank you JOHN!

Thanks be to John S. who encouraged me to put my computer on the home LAN’s router, and gave me some good tips to boot. See, when I first started webserving off my home computer, I couldn’t figure out how to be on the LAN and also allow my dynamic DNS client play nice through the router. John assured me it could be done and gave me some helpful hints on what to look for the last time we had coffee at the beloved Diesel in Davis Square.

Understand that I spent a LOT of time trying to make …

everyone who’s anyone was there

I wonder if the NYC photoblogger close to my own heart knew about this event. Wish I had. Not that I would have gone to NYC just to see it, but still, I wish I had known.

I feel so dreadfully out of the loop now. First I didn’t have any friends geeky hip enough to do International Talk Like A Pirate Day, then I missed Grey Monday, and now this. Old age is one tough bitch.

defending more than freedom

It seems that American servicewomen stationed in the Middle East have had more use for their combat skills than enemy engagement: there’ve been 112 reports of sexual misconduct over the past 18 months.

this just in

One of my favorite books for a long time has been Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. If you’ve known me for any length of time, I’ve probably persuaded you to read it, and you’ve probably enjoyed it as well.

Unfortunately, I just learned that Orson Scott Card is a maniacal gay basher who’s just published a vicious rant against gay marriages.

I feel like shit that I ever bought this man’s books (which I even bought used!) or believed in him. I know that sometimes it’s a good idea to separate a person’s character from their …

i am so, like, unaware

Dammit.

It’s Grey Tuesday. I wish I’d known about this in time to participate. In case you are unaware or can’t be bothered to click a link, today’s the day webheads have self-organazized to distribute a remix of the Beatles’ White Album (which relies heavily on samples from hip-hop artist Jay-Z’s Black Album). The subversion here is that EMI claims copyright control of the White Album and they’ve been busily working to lock down distribution of the album, originally handed out to friends by the remix artist, DJ Danger Mouse but now everywhere thanks to the …

do you think i’m pretty?

Hopefully this marks the end of a round of fiddling with the appearance of this part of the site, the weblog (the other parts are going to be 1, a page and archive just for links, and, 2, a page for me to write, uh, well, stuff of more general interest…non-personal-life-of-matthias-type stuff. or something. we’ll see how it goes, ok?). Please, anyone, sound of what you think of this design.

Especially you, NICK-O.

Cuz once this is ’set’, I can finish importing all the styles and such to Links and Samizdat.

To wit:
new banner
new typeface for entry …

the issue at hand

In a rare deviation from what you’ve no doubt come to expect, I’m going to come down firmly one side of the issue that even now divides our nation. I’m talking about miscegenation and how it threatens to rip this nation out from under God and thrust into the darkest pit of Satan’s own Hell. No, I do not believe that blacks and whites should be allowed to marry. I’m no racist and I believe everyone in this land of the free should have the same rights, but there’s nothing wrong with a state-sponsored civil union that …

me so funny

Sometimes, I swear: I can be such a wag. Honestly.

I was just enjoying a pint of extremely mucilaginous ice cream, flipping through my dogeared copy of Jason Crawford Teague’s DHTML & CSS For the World Wide Web, trying to find a chapter that might happen to interest me tonight or, perhaps, rediscover something I’d forgotten because it hadn’t made sense to me at the time but which now might (make sense) since I know a bit more. And I came across this chapter title: “Learning About Your Environment”. Beside it I had apparently — it’s in my ogrish all-caps …

i am busy bee

Carved out some weblog time tonight. Lots of improvements to what I consider the infrastructure of this part of the site. Namely: prettified the archive pages (individual, category, and monthly, thank you very much), or at least made their layout more conform with the main index home page front door thingie. Hit a couple snags but by and large very happy with how easy MT makes it to make great big sweeping sitewide changes with its templating system.

Made sure to include comment links with every entry on every archive page, as per the astute request of the …

steak drippings

Steak drippings, cooked onto the bottom of a glass pan.

Sorry it’s been so photo-heavy and not so writing-heavy of late. Just been too busy taking care of myself in ways that have nothing to do with sitting in front of a computer. I’ve had lots of stuff to post here, but I’ve also had the recent pleasure to rediscover the wonders of real life. It happens to the best of us.

The interesting thing is, weblogging like this has gotten me to pay just a little bit …
