how is your chat fu?

So somebody got the great idea of cartoonifying saved chat transcripts. Here’s a funny and disturbing excerpt from a dialogue I had with Heather sometime last year. No, I’m not telling you which of us said what.

attention waitstaff

Regardless of whether you’re actually waitstaff (that title was just to get my wife’s attention, tee hee), if you’ve ever been to a restaurant, you might be interested in learning that it’s apparently illegal to play copyrighted music if you haven’t payed the appropriate licensing fees.

Better check those recipes too. They might be copyrighted. Uh oh! Your jeans! Are they name-brand! Hope you paid the licensing fees for the right to advertise Guess on your ass! Nail polish? That color might be patented by Sherwin-Williams! Humming a tune while you work? CEASE AND DESIST …

emerging from shadow

I guess I’ve been living under a rock, because I only JUST THIS SECOND learned that Angelina is the daughter of Jon Fucking Voight. How can this be? How could I have missed this? Is it because she is impossibly beautiful and he’s….he’s…well…SO NOT?

Bonus Angelina quote to brighten your day: “You’re young, you’re drunk, you’re in bed, you have knives; shit happens.”

Angelina, you’re so cool.

computers != smart

I’ve decided to retire my thorn-at-verizon-dot-net email account. While I’m waiting for anyone to whom it could possibly matter to catch on and update their address books, I’ve instantiated a “rule” in my mail client to respond to mails that come into that account in two ways: first transfer a copy of the errant email to my MIT email account, and then, second, send an email to the sender explaining that I don’t use that account anymore.

By default, Mail.app (my email program) Replies-to-Sender with the sender’s original text, “quoted up” one level. I hope you know what I …

so very much

I’ll take a moment from spinning these plates to tell you:

* so much has been going on in my life and in my rich imagination that not only have i not had time to blog about it, i can’t even order everything in my head to sufficiently articulate it in such a platypus gazebo trainwreck o say can you.

* believe it or not I am still working on the conclusion of last month’s true-life “bully story”. it’s mostly all there in me noggin now, i’ve just got to get it down in html.

* yes, heather, i’m going to change …

it was this way

I remember thinking, There is NO WAY they are ever going to seriously be able to make it so that EVERYONE puts a BAR CODE on EVERYTHING, the first time I saw a laser scanner in a supermarket. I also remember wanting so bad to see the laser, imagining it would have to be something like the lasers in Star Wars, the only lasers I had seen so far in my nine years or so of life.

…boy, was I disappointed. Still… the warnings about losing an eye were kinda exciting, and almost made up for the utter anticlimax …

gcc, rss, xml, mt, and me

Excitement: finally got the XML::Parser module to compile on a Mac. So? Well, I’ll you So. I’ve been trying off and on for a while to get my del.icio.us links to appear in the sidebar of this blog. In order to that, I had to install a plug-in for parsing rss feeds into movable type, the blogging software I use. And in order to do that, I had to install a perl module called XML::Parser….which, in turn, happens to need a C library called expat.

All week, every time I tried to compile …

haircut

Just doing a little grooming of the website. Bellow if you see something that looks like a hideous mistake.

Still just messing about though, so, like, don’t panic or anything.

UPDATE: so i guess i could live with this for a while. looks fine in all mac browsers, with the typical exceptions: opera and IE. Don’t have a PC on me here at home, so I’ll have to wait til Monday to see if it breaks in IE/Win… Best viewed in Safari (because it supports the text-shadow attribute!

deliciousness

Pretty much just cuz I can, I’ve posted an html version of our video library, thanks to the awesome DeliciousLibrary app (and a handy little one-trick app called DeliciousExporter) right here. Will probably get all our games up there at some point, don’t know about books.

I’m almost 50% sure that someday, somehow, having a web-based database of all our media will be useful. No, really.

Just flexing those geek muscles. Nothing to see here, folks, move along.

gift suggestion

If you’re fretting how late you are getting me my Xmas present, remember that I just got a new nano, and I think you’ll breathe a sigh of relief when you see that Intergem is offering a 580-diamond iPod nano case.

$12,500 is a small price to pay for a clean conscience, don’t you think?
